East London free newspaper to go monthly

An independent free newspaper published in East London is to increase its frequency from quarterly to monthly to meet what is says is "increasing popular demand."

The Hackney Citizen was launched in July 2008 and now claims a readership of 30,000 in the East End borough.

It has now announced that from next month it will be going monthly and will no longer be delivered free from door to door, although people will be able to sign up for a susbcription service that includes home delivery.

Instead it will be handed out in the first week of every month at markets, train stations and local cafes, shops and businesses.

A story on the Citizen's website read: "Due to increasing and popular demand, Hackney Citizen is expanding from its quarterly print editions to become a monthly publication in July.

"More news, comment and features on this more frequent basis will enable the people who live and work in Hackney to be better informed about what is really happening in London’s most exciting borough."

The title is produced by a team of freelancers and volunteers and seeks to champion investigative and citizen journalism. It also features contributions from local freelance journalists.

It was previously distributed door-to-door in the N16, E5, E8 and E9 postcodes.
